Barcelona’s links with Bernardo Silva come as a pleasant surprise. The Catalans are struggling with their finances, and for them to target a player valued at over €80 million is unusual, yet speaks volumes about their pull.
It is clear that the Blaugranas cannot come remotely close to signing the Portuguese star at the moment. Silva dreams of wearing the garnet and blue colours, but the club will first have to ensure a big-name departure.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta was casually asked about the possibility of signing Silva for the club this summer and his reply spoke volumes about the inclination of the Catalans’ administration.
“Yes, I would like to,” he said without breaking a sweat, indirectly confirming the Catalans’ pursuit of the Manchester City star.
Barcelona are currently working hard to secure departures, but it is clear that the situations of Franck Kessie, Ferran Torres, and Ansu Fati take centre stage now.
The Portuguese star’s former teammate, Ilkay Gundogan, was asked about the possibility of him joining the club during his presentation as a Barcelona player yesterday. Understandably, however, the German midfielder opted for the safer route out by quoting Silva’s contractual situation.
“He is an incredible player, I think he has many qualities to be a high-level player but he has a contract with City, so I can say little.”
Reports state that the 28-year-old would be willing to join the Blaugranas even on a lower salary as it is his dream to don the famous colours. All eyes are now on the offices in Catalonia and their efforts to create space on the Financial Fair Play front.
